Breakaway Roping Horses

For Shelby Boisjoli, It Starts with the Horse

Canadian-born cowgirl Shelby Boisjoli has made her mark on the foundation of the breakaway roping industry, gaining acclaim with quick catches, hard stops, and fast times.

Growing up in a rodeo family, Shelby was riding alongside her sisters at a young age. No stranger to hard work, her father never bought her and her siblings’ expensive finished horses, but instead taught them the value of making their quality mounts through lots of wet saddle blankets. Perhaps the most impactful of these childhood horses was Flop, who carried Shelby and each of her sisters to provincial titles from grades six to twelve. This amazing gelding taught her what a good breakaway horse should feel like and provides the standard for what she looks for in horses today.

Country Singer Horses Ranch

A Ranch Hand’s Own Song

Sterling Drake made his initial music debut with several covers of classic songs. His talent was apparent, as was his authenticity. He crooned in smoky rooms across the country as old cowboys and young buckaroos, waitresses, cowgirls, and children all listened to the guitar man’s song. His music was stripped down and honest, and yet guarded, as though there was something still to be unleashed.

Artisan Horses

Cinch Making Sisters

Several years ago, sisters Dana and Tracy Eklund were working at a therapeutic riding program. Like many service-oriented groups, the center was operating with a $400 tack budget, and yet responsible for procuring and maintaining working tack for around twenty horses. Taking into consideration the cost of quality tack, the need for special therapeutic equipment, and the desire to ensure horse comfort and proper fit, it was very difficult to keep things running with the minimal tack budget. In addition, neoprene cinches would sore the horses, the saddles were small children’s saddles, and the horses were large draft crosses.

Artisan Horses Rodeo Queen

Portraying Passion

The work of a true artist is like a secret, with a little bit of the hidden truth revealed in each depiction of both reality and imagination. For artist Cat Davenport, portraying horses means highlighting the beautiful detail of what is present while also drawing the observer’s mind to the hidden possibilities. You can look at her sketches and find yourself drawn into the eyes of the animal, contemplating their thoughts and personality. Her work brings the creation to life, making it apparent that she knows her subject matter inside and out.

Breakaway Roping Horses

A Firm Foundation

Breakaway roping has gained momentum in the rodeo world over the past year, leaving many passionate women hopeful as they now face better odds of being able to make a living swinging a rope. While the new jackpots and growing inclusion at rodeos is both exciting and long awaited, the most promising aspect of the industry is the firm foundation created by the women who are the face of this fresh journey.
