Cody Brewer is the kind of guy you’d want to have a beer with. As down to earth and humble as he is talented, his passion is apparent when he chats about his dogs and horses.
Although best known as a PBR bull rider and for his time on the TV show the Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, Cody is also the founder of Coastal Cowboy Ranch and Rodeo and shares his enthusiasm for hog hunting through raising top notch cur dogs, adopting and training mustangs to brave the rough conditions, and then guiding folks on the hunt itself through a partnership with Wilderness Hunting Lodge. Not as interested in the actual kill after hundreds of hunts, Cody just loves to have the dogs run.
His kennel, Dry Hollow Curs, demands the best of dogs while on the hunt and while working cattle, as his string is talented enough to handle both bringing in the big boars and the bulls. Each with a unique job, his kennel is built on the foundation of the following: Hickory, Bodock, Hemlock, and Yellow Wood. Hickory, a seven year old female, was the start of it all, as she was bred to a male dog out of Florida to get Bodock, the master of the pack. Bodock is a four year old who has since produced two sons Hemlock and Yellow Wood through a cross with an Oklahoma cur female. The Dry Hollow Cur line blends the best of several states to take Tennessee hunts to the next level. These multi-talented dogs are much like Cody, who spends his weeks working as a farm manager at Tennessee Tech, caring for beef cattle and even assisting with the occasional community cow catching job. Not to mention, Cody also trains the mustangs he gets in to be ready for the hunt, and finds that while their toughness is a highly desired trait, it can present some challenges to overcome during training. He speaks of one such mustang who would kick everything, to the point you could drop a coke can behind him and he’d punt it. Yet once he got a little bit of time under saddle and discovered the adventures awaiting him on the mountain hunt, he settled right down into his new role.
With the heat setting in and the dogs needing a break, Brewer will return to rodeoing on the weekends and may especially focus on some of the IPRA rodeos in the Southeast. With all the running up the mountains on the hunt he stays in shape without having to spend much time in the gym. Paired with his laid-back personality, he is a natural bull rider, who is able to hone his mental game through simply enjoying the ride and staying gritty.
If you’re looking for a fully guided boar hunt on horseback in the Tennessee mountains, some fun video footage and pictures of cowboying by him and his friends, or just an exciting eight second ride, keep an eye on Cody Brewer.
